“WorXpace makes our work so much easier”
10 locations, 170 different courses, around 1,000 teachers, 200 staff in supporting roles, and nearly 12,000 students. Aventus, based in Gelderland, The Netherlands, is an educational institution of considerable scale in every sense of the word. And that makes for a serious challenge for its IT department. Infrastructure administrators Samir Boukari and Marcel Bosch are therefore pleased with AppiXoft’s supporting software. “For managing IT workplaces, we now only use worXpace.”
As the first organization to start working with worXpace, Aventus has now been using it for more than five years. “We were the first or second organization to start working with it,” Samir recalls. “Before that, we used Scense, also from AppiXoft.” Aventus did not switch because it was unhappy with Scense. “Not at all,” says Samir. “We were actually very happy with it. But at the time, we had started a policy of moving to SaaS solutions wherever possible. We knew worXpace was on its way, and we were able to start testing it right away. Those tests were successful; worXpace turned out to be exactly what we were looking for at that moment: a workplace management tool that makes our work so much easier.”
Handling it all with ease
Samir and Marcel give an example. “One of our tasks is software distribution,” says Marcel. “That includes the laptop carts in the teaching buildings, the fixed PCs in our three exam rooms, and the laptops used by teachers and support staff. And then there are 12,000 students using school software on their own laptops. With worXpace, we can take care of all of that very easily. Our students, for example, install the worXpace client on their own laptop. We then define which school software they can use on their device and which permissions they have.”
A magic toolbox
What stands out, according to Marcel, is the versatility of worXpace. “Updating software, installing printers and printer drivers, making sure certain application settings are available on laptops and computers. You can do so much with worXpace; it’s basically a big magic toolbox.”
Samir nods in agreement. “For example, on the computers in the exam rooms, we used worXpace to create a separate disk partition for Facet, DUO’s digital exam environment. From worXpace, we could very easily arrange for a startup menu to appear when the computers boot, allowing the user to choose between Windows and Facet. That way, students can go straight into the exam environment without first having to click through a whole menu.”
You can do so much with worXpace; it’s basically a big magic toolbox.
Easily adapting applications
The biggest advantage of worXpace, the administrators say, is how easy it is to prepare applications. Samir: “Another thing that’s useful is that worXpace handles both .msi and .exe files well. It can read an application with an MSI [and MSIX, App-V red.] installer very easily; it understands exactly how the whole package is put together. As an administrator, you can then adjust the application to your needs with just a few clicks.”
Rolling out updates quickly
Another benefit they point to is the speed with which software updates can be rolled out using worXpace. “It happens immediately. That means we can move fast. Sometimes people are late in requesting a new application, and then you need to get it ready quickly. With worXpace, that’s done in no time.”
For cybersecurity, that is an important point too, Marcel says. “When a vendor releases a patch, you want to get it onto all machines very quickly. With worXpace, we can.” And that is far from a luxury, he adds. “Every day we receive phishing alerts, or a report that a user has clicked a malicious URL and a password has been compromised. Being able to act quickly is extremely important.”
We notice that AppiXoft really listens to us.
Impressed
Samir and Marcel are satisfied with their collaboration with AppiXoft. “They are easy to reach; when you call, you don’t first have to work your way through a long menu or past a chatbot. Recently, there was an issue with filtering that didn’t work in a license view for students. That same day, they had already found and fixed the problem. That is basically how it always goes. We often get a response the same day, or the next day at the latest. I’m often genuinely impressed by that.”

What would they still like to see in worXpace? “Reports on application usage, for our Procurement department,” Samir says straight away. “As a school, we use a lot of applications, and they cost quite a bit of money. Our Procurement colleagues would therefore like insight into how often they are actually used. And something we are looking forward to is an extension for WinGet that can update applications automatically. We were recently told that this is on its way. An extension like that would save us a lot of work again.”
“Other than that, we are very happy with the features that are already there,” Marcel adds. “We notice that AppiXoft really listens to us. In every update, we see things that have been added because of our feedback, or feedback from other schools. And what is very nice: because we have been working with worXpace for so long, we are often asked to test an update and share our findings.” He laughs: “So in a way, we don’t just work with AppiXoft; we also work a little bit for them.”

“WorXpace maakt ons werk véél gemakkelijker”

Aventus – in Gelderland – is letterlijk een onderwijsinstelling van formaat. En daarmee een flinke uitdaging voor haar afdeling ICT. Beheerders Infrastructuur Samir Boukari en Marcel Bosch zijn daarom blij met de ondersteunende software van AppiXoft. “Voor het beheer van IT-werkplekken werken we alleen nog maar met worXpace.”
Aventus begon als eerste organisatie met worXpace en werkt er nu al ruim vijf jaar mee. “Wij waren de eerste of tweede organisatie die ermee ging werken”, blikt Samir terug. “Daarvoor gebruikten we Scense, ook van AppiXoft.” Het was niet vanuit ontevredenheid over Scense dat Aventus overstapte. “Zeker niet”, zegt Samir, “we waren daar juist heel blij mee. Maar in die tijd begonnen we met het beleid om waar mogelijk over te stappen op SaaS-oplossingen. We wisten dat worXpace eraan zat te komen en daar konden we meteen mee testen. Die testen waren succesvol; worXpace bleek precies te zijn wat we op dat moment zochten: een werkplekbeheertool die ons werk véél gemakkelijker maakt.”
Makkelijk regelen
Samir en Marcel geven een voorbeeld. “Een van onze taken is softwaredistributie”, zegt Marcel. “Dan heb je het over de laptopkarren in de onderwijsgebouwen, de vaste pc’s in onze drie examenruimtes en de laptops van docenten en ondersteunend personeel. Én 12.000 studenten die schoolsoftware op hun laptop gebruiken. Via worXpace kunnen we dat allemaal heel makkelijk regelen. Onze studenten bijvoorbeeld, installeren de worXpace-client op hun eigen laptop en dan geven wij aan welke schoolsoftware zij op hun apparaat kunnen gebruiken en welke rechten ze hebben.”
Grote toverdoos
Wat daarbij opvalt, is de veelzijdigheid van worXpace, vindt Marcel. “Het updaten van software, het installeren van de printers en printerdrivers, zorgen dat bepaalde instellingen van applicaties beschikbaar komen op de laptops en computers. Je kan gewoon heel veel met worXpace; het is een eigenlijk een grote toverdoos.”
Samir knikt bevestigend. “Zo hebben we op de computers in de examenlokalen met worXpace een aparte schijfpartitie gemaakt voor Facet, de digitale examenomgeving van DUO. Vanuit worXpace konden we heel eenvoudig regelen dat er bij het opstarten van de computers een keuzemenu verschijnt waarbij de gebruiker kan kiezen voor Windows of Facet. Zo kunnen studenten direct naar de examenomgeving en hoeven ze niet eerst door een heel menu heen.”
Je kan gewoon heel veel met worXpace; het is een eigenlijk een grote toverdoos.
Applicaties eenvoudig aanpassen
Het grootste voordeel van worXpace vinden de beheerders hoe eenvoudig je applicaties kunt klaarzetten. Samir: “Wat ook fijn is: worXpace is goed met .msi- én met .exe-bestanden. Het kan een applicatie met een msi-installer [en MSIX, App-V red.] heel simpel inlezen; het begrijpt precies hoe het hele pakket is opgebouwd. Als beheerder kun je vervolgens met een paar muisklikken de applicatie naar jouw wensen aanpassen.”
Updates snel doorvoeren
Wat ze ook een voordeel vinden, is de snelheid waarmee software updates kunnen worden doorgevoerd met WorXpace. “Dat gebeurt direct. Daardoor kunnen we heel snel schakelen. Zo komt het voor dat mensen laat zijn met een aanvraag voor een nieuwe applicatie en dat je die dan snel moet klaarzetten. Dat is met worXpace zo gebeurd.”
Ook voor de cyberveiligheid is dat een belangrijk punt, zegt Marcel. “Als een fabrikant een patch heeft uitgebracht, wil je die heel snel op alle machines zetten. Met worXpace kan dat.” Dat is bepaald geen overbodige luxe, vindt hij. “We krijgen elke dag wel phishingwaarschuwingen, of dat een gebruiker op een foute URL heeft geklikt en een wachtwoord is gehackt. Het is heel belangrijk dat we dan snel kunnen schakelen.”
We merken dat ze bij AppiXoft echt naar ons luisteren.
Onder de indruk
Samir en Marcel zijn tevreden over de samenwerking met AppiXoft. “Ze zijn goed bereikbaar; je hoeft niet eerst door een heel keuzemenu of langs een chatbot als je belt. Laatst was er een probleem met het filteren, dat werkte niet in een licentieweergave voor studenten. Dezelfde dag hadden ze het lek al gevonden én opgelost. Zo gaat het eigenlijk altijd. We krijgen vaak dezelfde of hooguit de volgende dag al een reactie. Ik ben daar vaak van onder de indruk.”

Wat ze graag nog zouden zien in worXpace? “Rapportages over het gebruik van de applicaties, voor onze afdeling Inkoop”, zegt Samir direct. “Als school gebruiken we veel applicaties en die kosten aardig wat geld. Onze Inkoop-collega’s willen daarom graag inzicht in hoe vaak ze worden gebruikt. En waar we naar uitkijken: een uitbreiding voor WinGet, die zelf applicaties kan updaten. Laatst kregen we te horen dat die eraan komt. Zo’n uitbreiding zou ons weer veel werk schelen.”
“Verder zijn we heel tevreden over de functies die er al zijn”, vult Marcel aan. “We merken dat ze bij AppiXoft echt naar ons luisteren. In elke update zien we wel weer dingen die erin zijn gekomen door onze feedback, of die van andere scholen. En wat heel leuk is: omdat we al zo lang met worXpace werken, worden we vaak gevraagd of we een update willen testen en onze bevindingen terugkoppelen.” Hij lacht: “Dus eigenlijk werken we niet alleen met, maar ook een beetje vóór AppiXoft.”
