“With worXpace, we can provide access to all the different workplaces across Royal Cosun”
There is a whole world behind growers’ cooperative Royal Cosun – formerly Suikerunie – in The Netherlands. It includes not only farmers growing sugar beet, chicory and potatoes on their land, but also factories where the harvests are processed, four business groups (Cosun Beet Company, Cosun Ingredients, Aviko and Duynie), each with its own focus. An organisation this diverse naturally has many different types of workplaces too. To manage them, Cosun’s IT department chose AppiXoft’s worXpace.
Royal Cosun is currently making the transition to the modern workplace. One of the architects behind this transition is Wilco Hirdes. To him, a good workplace is like a toolbox. “It contains the tools our people need to do their jobs properly and securely. It is up to us to set up and manage that toolbox in the right way.”
With more than four thousand workplaces, all with different needs, that is quite the challenge, Wilco says. “We used to manage our workplaces with Ivanti Workspace Control, but that is being discontinued. We are now right in the middle of moving to worXpace. We chose this workspace manager because it is very broad, flexible and cloud-based. It lets us provide access to every workplace across Cosun.”
Careful setup
Wilco and his colleagues are initially using worXpace to set up and manage the workplaces in Cosun’s factories. “Our factory employees use Azure Virtual Desktop. We also use all kinds of software to keep the factories running as efficiently as possible, such as weighbridge and metal-detection applications. We set up the computer workstations in the factories very carefully. Not all of our factory employees are equally confident with digital tools. We want to make things as easy as possible for them by providing a workplace that is fully configured in advance. They log in and immediately have the right software at their disposal. They also only see the applications they are authorised to use. A factory employee in the Aviko business group, for example, cannot see the Cosun Beet Company applications.”
“WorXpace is very intuitive, and the interface is highly accessible.”
Microsoft 365 environment
Alongside the factory workplaces, the IT department also manages the workplaces used by office employees in Cosun’s business groups. “Everyone has a modern workplace with a laptop,” Wilco explains. “A key tool for these workplaces is Microsoft’s 365 environment. Office employees also use various ERP applications for areas such as finance, inventory management and HR. The innovation centre also uses a range of laboratory applications. Because we are still in the middle of the migration, we are currently managing some of these workplaces with Microsoft Intune. We have, however, already started using worXpace to fully configure large software packages such as AutoCAD, which we can’t install properly through Intune.”
Moving fast
Wilco is looking forward to using worXpace everywhere. “We have already seen that changes made through worXpace – unlike with Intune – are applied instantly. That is great, because it means employees can get back to work quickly. That speed also matters from a security perspective. If there’s a problem with software that poses a security risk, we can move fast and get a new version ready.” For office workplaces, the fact that worXpace is cloud-based is another major advantage, Wilco continues. “A lot of office staff work from home, so it is important for us to be able to roll out software changes or other settings remotely.”
Intuitive and accessible
The migration is not yet complete, but Wilco can already see that worXpace is a major asset for Cosun. “The platform takes a huge amount of work off our hands. Without worXpace, I think we would have needed twice as many people in our department. WorXpace is also very intuitive, and the interface is highly accessible. You can carry out actions and change settings quickly, and you can see exactly what is happening.”
“Without worXpace, we would have needed twice as many people in our department.”
Automatic updates
One major feature Wilco still wanted from worXpace recently became a reality: automatic updates for standard applications. “Keeping web browsers, photo-editing software, applications such as WinZip and 7-Zip, and Adobe Acrobat Reader up to date used to take a lot of work for us as administrators. You had to keep track of when an update was released, and then you had to build, test and deploy it … Now we can select applications from a library and have them update automatically. We do not have to worry about it anymore.”
Superb
Wilco is very pleased with the move to both worXpace and AppiXoft. “We had a good feeling about the people there from the very first presentation. They simply showed us what worXpace could do, without being pushy. It was entirely up to us to decide what we thought of it. Now that we are working with them, we are still just as positive. When something comes up, you immediately get the right people on the phone. They listen to you and understand what you mean. Then the developers get straight to work, and the issue is resolved very quickly. Having those direct lines to the support department is simply superb.”
Zorgvuldig inrichten
