Welcome to our 10th-anniversary celebration!

Over the past decade, we’ve been on an exciting journey, starting with Scense as a groundbreaking on-premises workspace management solution and evolving into worXpace, our innovative, cloud-based platform. As we mark this milestone, we’re proud to reflect on the ways we’ve empowered IT teams and organizations worldwide to create flexible, user-friendly digital workspaces. This page is a tribute to our clients, partners, and dedicated team members who have been with us every step of the way.

AppiXoft: the journey so far

In 2014, AppiXoft was born with a clear vision: to remove limitations so people can accomplish anything. With a passion for innovation and a commitment to simplifying IT, we continued Scense under our own management. At the time, Scense was our first solution designed to give IT teams powerful tools to manage applications and user environments effortlessly. From day one, we set out to make digital workspaces flexible, secure, and intuitive for both IT administrators and end-users alike.

As early as 2016, we recognized the potential of the cloud to transform workspace management. Anticipating the growing demand for remote and flexible work solutions, we began developing worXpace to bring our vision of cloud-based workspace management to life. This strategic shift became even more critical in 2020, as global events accelerated the need for secure, adaptable digital workspaces. worXpace quickly proved invaluable, empowering organizations to support their teams seamlessly, wherever they were.

Celebrating Our Earliest Adopters

Some of our earliest adopters have been with us from the very beginning, helping shape Scense and now worXpace into the robust solutions they are today. Organizations like Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland, who adopted Scense 1.0, and IJsselland Ziekenhuis, an early user of Scense 2.0, placed their trust in us at an  important time. More recently, Aventus and ROC Mondriaan have taken bold steps by migrating from Scense to worXpace, with Aventus joining even before the official release. Their continued partnership not only demonstrates their commitment to innovation but also reinforces our dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our customers.

We thank our customers

Our journey wouldn’t be possible without the trust, collaboration, and insights of our customers. Over the years, your commitment to innovation and excellence has inspired us to continually improve and adapt. Together, we’ve overcome challenges, celebrated successes, and pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in workspace management. As we mark this milestone, we are deeply grateful to each of you for allowing us to be part of your journey. Thank you for your partnership and the confidence you place in us every day.

Technical Evolution

The roots of worXpace run deep, tracing back to the early days of workspace management. In 1999, the two future founders of AppiXoft developed one of the very first workspace management solutions, known as SCE, designed for Windows NT 4.0. This foundational product was built with a clear vision: to  empower IT administrators with uniform control over digital workspaces. Building on this vision, they created Scense in 2001 – a more powerful, on-premises solution that gained traction for its ability to deliver a personalized, flexible user experience and streamlined application management.

For over a decade, Scense continued to evolve, establishing itself as a trusted tool in on-premises workspace management across various sectors. When AppiXoft acquired Scense in 2014, it marked the beginning of an ambitious journey to reimagine workspace management for a rapidly changing digital landscape. Recognizing the transformative potential of the cloud, AppiXoft launched an initiative in 2016 to bring powerful workspace management to the cloud. This project, initially codenamed ‘Keystone’, became worXpace in 2021 – a platform designed to deliver the same trusted management and control with the added flexibility, speed, and reach of the cloud.

Today, Scense is still going strong as a robust on-premises solution, trusted by organizations that value direct, localized control over their digital workspaces. Meanwhile, worXpace extends this legacy into the cloud, bringing unmatched flexibility, speed, and scalability to workspace management. Together, Scense and worXpace embody over two decades of innovation, offering organizations the choice between dependable on-premises management and the adaptability of the cloud – each tailored to meet the diverse needs of IT teams and end-users alike.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Scense began as a pioneering workspace management solution, steadily evolving through each version to meet the changing needs of IT environments. Here’s a fun gallery of ‘old logo’ Scense versions. These early versions laid the groundwork for a solution that would become indispensable to IT administrators managing dynamic, user-centered workspaces.

SCE

In 1998, development began on the Session Control Engine (SCE), an inovative system designed to replace traditional logon scripts with a more efficient, manageable approach. SCE quickly proved its value, reducing logon times from three minutes to just thirty seconds. As the technology evolved, later versions of SCE could install and run applications, laying the foundation for what would eventually become Scense. Although SCE was never published commercially, its potential set the stage for a new era in workspace management and inspired the vision behind Scense.

Scense 1.0

In 2001, Scense 1.0 was launched, marking a significant leap forward in workspace management. Built on Microsoft MMC with plug-ins for the admin console, the initial setup provided administrators with tools to manage scripts and tasks. However, stability challenges with MMC led to the development of a dedicated plug-in host, enhancing Scense’s reliability and usability. Scense 1.0 was the first iteration of a system designed to simplify and empower IT administration, setting a strong foundation for the robust features that would follow in future versions.

Scense 1.1

With the release of Scense 1.1, the platform introduced the aforementioned dedicated plug-in host, bringing greater stability and a fresh, updated interface. This version expanded functionality with new actions and enhanced real-time management capabilities, enabling IT administrators to respond quickly to user needs and manage workspaces more effectively.

Scense 2

Released in 2002, Scense 2 introduced significant advancements in both functionality and user experience. With the new Scense Explorer, a Windows Explorer-style UI, administrators could navigate and manage workspace settings more intuitively. Styled to match Windows XP, Scense 2 felt seamlessly integrated with the latest operating systems of the time. Additionally, the introduction of the Scense Repository marked an early, innovative step toward reusing application packages across multiple customers, paving the way for scalable and efficient workspace management.

Scense 5

In 2007, Scense 5 addressed some longstanding back-end configuration challenges by introducing a Setup Wizard, which simplified the installation of server components. Reflecting Scense’s commitment to staying current, the interface adopted a Windows Vista-inspired design, showcasing modern aesthetics. This release also introduced a new UI layer to streamline management tasks, though some rigid mode-switching persisted, which would be improved in later versions. By this stage, the Scense Repository was phased out as the product continued evolving toward a more flexible management experience.

Scense 7

Aligned with the release of Windows 7 in 2009, Scense 7 introduced an updated interface featuring the sleek Aero style, reflecting Scense’s dedication to incorporating modern design elements. With each new release, Scense maintained compatibility with the latest Windows desktop and server versions, ensuring administrators could manage up-to-date environments seamlessly. Scense 7 continued this tradition, combining aesthetic upgrades with full support for Windows 7, Complete with a well implemented ribbon control in the Scense Explorer.
